Inside Trane Heat Pump — Jacksonville, FL — Willman Air

Is it time to invest in a new heating and cooling system for your Nocatee, FL home? If so, you’d be wise to consider having a heat pump professionally installed. A heat pump is an especially good option if you happen to be looking to replace both your heating and air conditioning equipment at the same time.

Heat Pumps Versus Traditional AC Systems

Traditional AC units use a combination of an evaporator, a condenser, a compressor, tubing, and a refrigerant to absorb heat from the air within the home and transfer it outside. They then use an air handler to blow the cooled air through the house via a system of ductwork that is usually hidden within the walls, floors, and ceilings. Central air-sourced heat pump systems work essentially the same way as traditional air conditioners with one rather significant exception.

Heat pumps feature a special valve that can reverse the flow of refrigerant. This allows the heat pump to heat your home in addition to cooling it. Heat pumps can provide effective heating in temperatures as low as 25-30 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes them ideal for warm climates like ours here in Florida. It’s worth noting that since these systems operate as your heater and your AC, they need to receive maintenance twice a year instead of once.

Central Heat Pumps Versus Ductless Models

Ductless heat pumps are also known as mini-splits and multi-splits. They work much the same as central models except that they don’t require ductwork. Instead, they utilize a conduit that contains all the necessary wiring and tubing, and only requires a secure hole a few inches wide to connect the indoor air handlers to the outdoor compressor unit.

On average, flaws in ductwork allow up to 30% of conditioned air to escape before it reaches its intended destination. This increases utility costs and causes undue strain to your HVAC equipment, as it has to work harder to make up for the loss.
